Ways to Open Cards Online

There are plenty of ways to open cards online, and if you’re new to it, the different names and formats can be confusing.

Here’s a look at the different formats, how they work, what you’re buying - and what you can expect to receive.

Opening formatWhat you openWhat you receiveExplore
Instant ripsAn online pack or mystery draw, with an instant digital reveal.A pull linked to a physical card or collectible, subject to the platform’s terms.Browse instant rip sites
Live personal openingsA pack or box that a host opens for you on camera. The cards from your pack or box, subject to the seller’s terms.Browse live openings
Shared card breaksA spot in a larger opening, often for a team or player.Only the cards assigned to your spot; you could receive nothing.Browse card breaks
Digital pack simulatorsA simulated pack, which may be free to open.Usually a digital experience without a physical card.—

Mystery Packs, Repacks, Gacha and Oripa

Instant rips aren’t the only way to open cards online, and there are a few other formats to be aware of - some of which overlap. Here’s what they generally mean:

  • Mystery packs are products with surprise contents, often assembled by a seller rather than the card manufacturer. Depending on the product, you might pull individual cards, graded slabs, sealed packs, or a mixture.
  • Repacks are products assembled from existing cards or collectibles, rather than sealed by the original card manufacturer.
  • Gacha describes a randomized draw where you pay for a chance to receive one of several possible prizes.
  • Oripa, short for “original pack,” is a term used in Japan for shop-assembled card packs and draws. You can find physical oripa as well as online versions.

A single product can - and often does - fit more than one description. For example, an instant rip can be a gacha-style mystery draw, while a physical repack can also be sold as a mystery pack. Always check the product itself to see what you’re buying and what you could actually receive.

Five Things to Check Before You Open

Before buying a pack or joining a break, take a moment to check these five things:

  1. What are you buying? A whole pack, a mystery draw or a spot in a shared break? Check exactly what your payment covers.
  2. What could you receive? Look at what you can pull - not just the chase cards. Check the published odds, and for shared breaks, understand how the cards are allocated.
  3. Who holds your cards? Find out who stores them after the opening, when they become yours, and how you can request delivery.
  4. Can you sell your pulls? Check whether there’s an instant buyback or marketplace, what fees apply, and whether you receive withdrawable money or site credit.
  5. What’s the total cost? Payment fees, storage, shipping, import taxes and selling charges can all add to the pack or spot price.

GachaMeister also recommends setting a budget before you begin ripping or opening. If you do decide to reuse buyback credit to keep opening, keep an eye on your total spend as opposed to only tracking your initial deposit.

Responsible collecting guidance →

What Happens After the Opening?

After a live personal opening or shared break, the seller will usually arrange delivery of any cards you’re eligible to receive. Instant rip sites often have a few more options: you may be able to leave your pulls in a vault, have them shipped, or accept an instant buyback or list them on a marketplace. Check the site’s available options, fees and deadlines before opening.

How We Research and Test

Choosing an opening site means trusting someone with your money - and potentially your cards. Here at GachaMeister, our reviews look at how each service works, what it costs - and what you can actually expect.

What we check varies depending on the opening format, but includes:

Excerpt from our research log: 306 Sports Cards homepage and Addictimon about/product pages checked 29 October 2026; Arena Club Slab Packs checked 25–26 October 2026. Source checks are separate from hands-on testing.
  • Platform and seller credibility: Company information, seller background, buyer protections and documented complaints. For live platforms, we separate the platform’s protections from the individual seller’s practices.
  • Products and opening rules: Pack selection, what you can pull, published odds and prize pools. For shared breaks, we look at how spots are sold and cards are allocated.
  • Prices and card values: Pack and spot prices, additional fees, valuation methods and buyback terms. If reliable sales data is available, we also compare it with advertised card values.
  • Opening experience: Payment options, account restrictions, usability, and how clearly purchases, results and balances are recorded.
  • Ownership, delivery and selling: Who holds or vaults your cards, your redemption rights, shipping costs, storage conditions and whether sale proceeds are withdrawable money or site credit.
  • Support and problem resolution: Contact options, dispute procedures and how problems are handled, including any responses we gathered during our hands-on testing.

Where possible, we always try to do our own testing here at GachaMeister. Each review makes it clear what we tested ourselves, and what we gathered through research.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can You Open Real Cards Online?

Yes! Some online services reveal results linked to physical cards, and live sellers can open physical packs on camera, too.

Are Instant Rips and Mystery Packs the Same Thing?

Not exactly. An instant rip lets you open a pack online and see what you’ve pulled straight away, while a mystery pack has surprise contents - often put together by a seller. A pack can be both, and mystery packs can also be opened at home, or by a host on a livestream.

Is a Live Opening the Same as a Card Break?

Not always. With a personal opening, a host opens a pack or box for you, and the cards from it are yours. In a shared break, you buy a spot, often for a team or player. You only get the cards assigned to your spot, so you could end up with nothing.

Are Online Card Openings the Same as Pack Simulators?

No. Pack simulators let you open virtual packs, usually without receiving any physical cards. Instant rips and live openings can give you cards to keep, store or have shipped, depending on the service.

Are Online Card-Opening Sites Safe?

That depends entirely on the platform and, on live marketplaces - the seller or breaker, too. Look into who you’re buying from, read independent reviews, and check the site’s terms and conditions to see what protection you have if something goes wrong.

Are There Age or Location Restrictions?

Yes, and they vary by site and product. Before signing up (and depositing any money), check how old the platform requires you to be, whether you can use the services where you live, and whether you need to verify your identity.

Can I Have Cards Shipped to My Country?

It depends on the site or seller - and their location. Check that they ship to your country before buying, even if they let you sign up and open packs.

Can I Sell a Card After I Pull It?

That depends on the site. Many instant rip sites offer buyback, which allows you to sell unwanted pulls straight back, while others also allow you to list it on a marketplace and wait for a buyer.

Where Can I Buy Sealed Packs to Open at Home?

If you’re looking for sealed products, GachaMeister’s SOURCE covers card shops, sellers and marketplaces, along with proxy buyers and forwarding services.
